Department Profile:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 1979
with a intake of 90 students. Over the years it has grown into a full
- fledged Department offering undergraduate and Post Graduate courses
in Mechanical Engineering with the present intake of 120 students There
has been significant improvement in quality, stature, infrastructure
and other facilities. It has so far graduated more than 3000 Mechanical
Engineers who are contributing significantly to the development and running
of various public and private organizations in India and abroad in the
fields of Academics, Research, Industrial and Social sector.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is Accredited by National
Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, and is ISO 9001
certified Institution. Currently the department has a privilege
of Seven Professors of which Six of them hold Ph.D. degree, Five Assistant
Professor, Six Senior Lecturers and Twelve Lecturers totaling 30 staff members.
Current Research Efforts:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering are currently having two research
projects under RPS :
- In the area of Material science to study the wear property of Aluminum
alloys.
- Principal Investigator : Prof.K.Prabhakar,2007-AICTE funded project
- Stall and search studies in ducted fan setup.

Some more proposals are submitted to AICTE/DST in the areas of Composites,
Robotics, Micro machining and Tribology and awaiting funding.
Overcoming Challenges:
- The Mission of the Department is “To impart World Class Technical
Education to the Students in the Profession to meet the challenges of the
post-reforms scenario and to emerge as
Ethically responsible Leaders, capable
of handling Society, Country and Global needs with a flair for Innovation.”
- In order to achieve this Mission, it is proposed to hold a “National
Seminar” in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, DSCE, inviting
Speakers of Eminence in their respective Fields and on topics in Mechanical
Engineering of current interest.
- It is also proposed to deliver Technical Talks in the Department by inviting
speakers well known in various fields of R&D / Industry / Academics.
- All the above activity is envisaged to bring in an R&D culture in
the Department, which is supposed to intensify faculty development and
further advancement in their respective fields of interest. In the ultimate
analysis it is the intention of the Department of Mechanical Engineering,
DSCE to encourage both UG and PG students to carry out their project works
in-house only.

- The Department has been recognized as Research Centre by Visveswaraya
Technological University, Belgaum. Presently 2 students are working for
their Doctoral degree in the department. It is proposed to induct few more
students either for Doctoral degree or for Master of Science degree by
research.
- It is proposed to set up a Centre of excellence in Computer Aided Engineering
Applications encompassing all the branches of Engineering with the State
of Heart Softwares to promote applied research. This Centre of excellence
will act as a nodal point for all the research activities for all the branches
of engineering.
- It is proposed to commence Training Programmes for small & Medium
scale Industrial Personnel to impart the State of the Heart technology.

Infrastructure
The departmental infrastructure details are as under-
- The departmental library has around 550 books and copies of student
project reports are also maintained for reference. The department library
caters to the immediate needs of students. The department has a seminar hall
with a seating capacity of 120. It has LCD Projector Overhead projector,
computer etc. Students, invited speakers etc. use this for delivering seminar
lectures/talks.
- The CAD laboratory is equipped with state-of-art facilities
and the necessary software’s. The laboratory is equipped with sufficient
number of computer systems and these computers are networked. The computers
are provided with internet facility and students of final year make use
of this facility for their project works.
Industry Interaction
In terms of industry academic interaction, the Department proposes to
have a thorough interaction with industries in and out of Bangalore and
the benefits are going to be three fold.
- Development / Testing – revenue generation for self-sustenance
as an outcome of this activity.
- Refresher training of personal for the purposes of development
on a reciprocal basis.
- Employment prospects of our students in industries can be improved.
The basis for all this activity is assumed to be signing of MOU’s
with various industries and a thorough follow up.
