The department of Industrial & production engineering was started
in the year 1984 with Lt. Col. B.Papanna as the first professor and HOD.
The 4 years BE degree in IPE was run under Bangalore University. Lt.
Col. B.Papanna headed the department till 1996. In the year 1992, Bangalore
university initiated a BE course in Industrial engineering & management
on a semester scheme. From 1996 to 2002, the professor and HOD of the department
of mechanical engineering was also
given the portfolio of heading the department of IEM. In the year 1998, engineering was also
given the portfolio of heading the department of IEM. In the year 1998,
the college was affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) with some modifications
in the syllabus and scheme. In September 2002, Professor & HOD, S.R.
Sridhar was HOD till 4th September 2006, and then onwards Prof. Dr.G.R.Srinivasa
took charge as Prof. & HOD till 27th June 2007, later Prof. Dr. B.V.Somasekhara
joined as Prof. & HOD from 5th August 2007 till date.
Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization of 1990s has evolved many areas of specialization such as IT, Logistics and service sectors. This has reflected on University curriculum being revised and as a result of which Industrial Engineering and management course was born in 1992.
Though an allied branch of Mechanical Engineering, IEM course is unique in its content, application and orientation This course prepares students to fit into managerial positions in all organizations like Manufacturing, service, IT, Logistics & Apparels.
IEM graduates are best suited to be entrepreneurs.

All service sectors including hospitality, tourism and Entertainment.
Current researches in the department are in the areas of Ergonomics, Entrepreneurship
and Sericulture.
Students can take up research in the areas of Industrial Engineering,
Logistics and Simulation, ERP,Manufacturing and Management

Majority of the students had the opportunity to participate with companies
coming to the campus for the placements.
